Videos and photos of the Makar Mela in Panauti, Nepal

The great Makar Mela(Capricorn pilgrimage) of Panauti in Nepal, which happens only every twelve years has concluded now. Day by day for one month thousands of pilgrims took the holy dip at Trivenighat, where the auspicious confluence of three rivers takes place.

The next Makar Mela will take place in Panauti in the year 2022(2078 B.S.).

Even the former King of Nepal, Mr. Gyanendra Shah took the chance to try to wash of his sins, breaking an ancient tradition that did forbid members of the royal family to enter Panauti.

See how the Panauti Makar Mela has been reported about on video...

Still only few Makar Mela video clips are on the net, but i found this funny one, from a group climbing up the Goraknath hill during their visit to Panauti...

Here is another one, showing some impressions of the Mela...

... and even another one, a bit more professional...

Every twelve years for one month from the new moon of January Hindus of Nepal and India travel to Panauti, to the Triveni Ghats, where the three rivers Lilavati, Punyamati and Rudravati create the auspicious 'Sassi Tirtha', the place to take the holy, purifying bath and by this wash of the sins.

Yurgan in Nepal 2009, visit to Narayanhiti Palace in Kathmandu, Nepal

After the revolution lead by the Maoists forced the king out, the Narayanhiti Palace is now a museum and open to the public.

Photographing is strictly prohibited and the level of maintenance is very low. The garden looks poor and despite the throne and a few statues no valuables of the former kings are displayed.

The site of the massacre of the family of King Birendra has been completely deconstructed and only the foundation of the buildings can be seen.

A strange atmosphere surrounds the whole palace, as civilian dressed secret service and army people are observing the visitors and are lazily hanging around in the rooms.

Still a lot of work has to be done to develop a museum showing to the people of Nepal and the world, how the kings of Nepal lived in a respectful way.

... photo quality is very low, as we tried not to risk our mobiles and camera...
